Symptoms of Kidney Stones, Dissolve Kidney Stones

Kidney Stones, otherwise also known as renal calculi, are the concretions of calcium salt and uric or oxalic acid that form solid hard mass of irregular shape in the tubal system of kidney. Patients often experience the excruciating pain at kidney when these stones block the flow of urine and move along the ureter.

Description of Kidney Stones

Kidney is one of the most important organs of our body system. It filters out toxic matters from our blood and cleans them out in the form of urine. During this process certain substances get dissolved in the urine. Due to some reasons those dissolved substances again solidify forming kidney stones. These stones oftentimes block the flow of urine causing pain and swelling of the kidney. Formation of kidney stones is quite common among

  • Male Caucasians over 30 years old
  • People having past experience of kidney stones
  • People who have close relatives having kidney stone problems

Types, Causes, and Symptoms of Kidney Stones

Nephrolithiasis or kidney stone formation could take place from different substances. Most common categories of kidney stones are as follows:

Calcium Stones: Most of the kidney stones fall into this category. Almost 80% of the patients have calcium stones. These stones are formed due to the deposition of calcium and phosphate or calcium and oxalate. Some ailments like primary parathyroidism, sarcoidosis, hyperthyroidism, renal tubular acidosis, multiple myeloma, hyperoxaluria, and some types of cancer might cause the enhancement of calcium level in blood resulting in calcium kidney stone.

Struvite Stones: These stones are made up of magnesium and ammonium phosphate and usually account for 10% of kidney stone cases. People who have been facing urinary tract infection repeatedly might be susceptible to certain bacteria. These bacteria release urease which enhances the pH level of urine. This new chemical environment helps struvite to get precipitated in urine thereby forming stones.

Uric Acid Stone: Almost 5% cases of kidney stones are formed with uric acid. Sometimes blood becomes oversaturated with high concentration of uric acid. At this situation solid crystallized particles of this acid precipitate out of blood and get deposited at the joints, big toe, and kidney, thereby slowly forming solid mass of uric acid stones.

Hereditary causes and excessive intake of high-purine content food could be the main reasons behind the high uric acid concentration. Some disorders and treatments like bone marrow disorders, genetic disorder like Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, chemotherapy for cancer, etc. are a few reasons behind the formation of uric acid stones.

Cystine Stone: About 2% of all kidney stones are cystine stone. Cystine is an amino acid which is filtered out by kidney from the blood. A normal kidney reabsorbs this amino acid and pass to the blood stream. But due to some genetic reasons kidney loses its power to absorb cystine amino acid. Due to this reason cystine gets deposited in the urine and forms crystalline cystine stones in the kidney.

General Symptoms of Nephrolithiasis do not appear until the stones enter the ureter. However, some indications could be as follows:

  • Prior to the movement of stones into ureter some patients reported to have blood in their urine
  • Sudden excruciating pain at the lower back or flank region and later on in the groin and thighs
  • Women usually feel the pain at vulva whereas men feel the same at their testicles
  • Frequent desire to urination, nausea, painful and scanty urination
  • Blockage of ureter causes kidney infection or pyelonephritis which is indicated by fever and chills.

Kidney Stones Diet

Proper diet is one of best ways to fend off kidney stones.

  • Drink plenty of water in order to wash away toxic wastes before they get deposited in the kidney
  • Restrict yourself from excess sugary foods, refined victuals, meat and dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, soda, and salt
  • Vegetables containing fiber, whole grains, and plat protein should be the main components of your diet
  • Reduce food items containing oxalate salts such as spinach, rhubarb, beets, nuts, chocolate, black tea, wheat bran, strawberries, and beans

Kidney Stones Prevention

  • Intake of lots of fluid would prevent the formation of any type of stones
  • Patients having calcium stones should reduce the intake of foods containing calcium (dairy products and green vegetables) and oxalate (chocolate, tea, cocked spinach, and asparagus)
  • People having uric acid stones should cut down on foods that have less meat, fish, and poultry
  • Patients who are suffering from struvite stone should avoid urine infection and protect themselves from bacterial attack
