Eczema is a common inflammatory skin disorder in which skin surface is raided with the formation of vesicles and tiny blisters which eventually turn into erythema. At the end the skin condition ends up with thickening and flaking of the skin.
Cause of Eczema
- Certain allergic conditions are supposed to play the main role behind the formation of eczema. Responsible allergens might include lather materials like belts and buckles, fabrics, clothes, foods and beverages.
- A few health disorders like varicose veins might be associated with eczema. One could also get eczema due to the side reactions of a few drugs.
- Itching due to eczema could be triggered by certain soaps, disinfectants, detergents, fruit juices, meats, dusts, etc.
- Due to viral attack if someone has got respiratory infections then it might create eczema.

- Diet like stale food, too spicy or oily food stuffs, and several other factors could shoot up pitta dosha which as per Ayurveda is the prime cause of eczema.
- A number of cosmetics, soaps, lotions, moisturizers, shaving creams or lotions, make-ups, etc. might cause irritation, itching, and eczema if they do not suit the natural physiochemical skin environment.
Types and Eczema Skin Symptoms
Symptoms of eczema largely vary depending on the types of this disease. Eczema could be categorized into seven types:
1. Allergic Contact Dermatitis
This type of eczema is often manifested as oozing rashes, redness, and irritating itchiness. It often happens due to the contact with metallic products like nickel in belt buckles or earrings. Synthetic or rubber products and dyes and perfumes, etc. could also trigger the disease.
2. Atopic Eczema
It is quite prevalent among neonates and children. It is mainly indicated by extremely itchy dry skin weal that turn into reddish rashes eventually.
3. Infantile Seborrhoeic Eczema
Also known as “cradle cap” this type of eczema is quite frequent among babies and manifests as dry peeling non-itchy skin especially at the nappy or scalp area and spread very rapidly.
4. Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Detergents or chemicals might develop itching and redness on the skin of hands causing this type of eczema. Women who clean dishes and clothes with bare hands often suffer from this.
5. Varicose Eczema
Elderly people often get affected by the skin disease. It mainly appears at the lower legs in the form of itchy and dry skin around the ankles or shins.
6. Adult Seborrhoeic Eczema
This type of eczema is indicated by dandruff of mild nature. It originates from the scalp of the adult sufferers and can extend over the ear, face, and chest.
7. Discoid Eczema
Adults are mainly affected by this skin disease. It is indicated by small red patch which appears on the lower legs or the trunk.
Other Eczema Skin Symptoms
As per Ayurveda there are a number of common indications such as wet patches with oozing liquids or dry patches. Reddish pustules or patches, vesicles, or large blisters are some of the frequently occurring symptoms. Flaking, cracking, or exfoliation of the skin could also be found. Many times the eczema affected area is found to have pigmentation and scratch marks.
Eczema Prevention
Bathing: It is advisable to take quick lukewarm shower for 10 to 20 minutes in order to mitigate itching and dryness of skin due to eczema. It is best to stay away from chemical soaps and shampoos which could be harsh and irritating for your skin. After taking bath never rub yourself with towel, instead gently pat dry and apply herbal moisturizers which are gentle and soothing for skin.
Avoiding Allergens: By avoiding allergens like pet dander, pollen, perfumes, dust, etc. one could reduce the chance to get eczema. Use vacuum cleanser for dust problem. Replace the carpet with linoleum, woods, or other flooring materials.
Excessive Sweating and Skin Rashes: Excessive sweating could trigger skin rashes at the areas where skin folds such as, under the breasts, near joints, and other areas of the body. Weight loss is one of the ways to deal with eczema.
Kids and Eczema: A significant number of neonates suffer from eczema which eventually fades away with age. Some of the rashes grow developing other type of eczema. As scratching is the primary reason behind child eczema make it sure that children’s nails are cut short to the minimum.
Diet: Avoid food items, such as soya, cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, and barley), sesame seeds, peanuts, nuts, eggs, cow’s milk, fish and shellfish which aggravate allergic condition and so to the eczema.
