Yeast is a fungus scientifically named as candida. In general candida fungus remains alive on our skin especially in the most areas of our body that is in mouth and in vagina. That is why yeast infection is mainly observed in mouth and vagina. Vaginal yeast infection is also known as vaginitis. In vaginitis, the affected patient starts suffering from vaginal inflammation. It is a common female disease and it has been observed that 75% women had experience of vaginitis at least once in their lives.
Vaginitis is also known as candidiasis and vulvovaginitis because in some instances the vulva part of vagina gets swollen by yeast infection.
There are different reasons which contribute for the development of infection of vaginal yeast infection. There are two common reasons for this infection, either new yeast get to enter in vagina or existing yeast in vagina get increased.
Whereas common bacterial vaginitis can be treated by simple dose of antibiotic, vaginal yeast infections needs more time and perseverance because it is a nagging disease and it is not possible to completely eliminate yeast existence from moist vaginal area.
There is another reason behind the vaginal yeast infection; it is the injury of inner vagina. For example, female patients with suppressed immune system and in post-chemotherapy session may suffer from the problem of vaginitis.
Other than these causes there are some other triggers for vaginal infection like diabetes mellitus, consumption of oral contraceptives, and induced pregnancy etc.
Those who are regular users of perfumed vaginal spray or douches are more susceptible in developing vaginitis quite frequently than non-user of these items.
A vaginal yeast infection is not to be considered as sexually transmitted disease because the fungus candida always remains inside vagina even in normal condition. A man can have yeast infection in penis in case he makes sexual intercourse with a vaginitis affected partner.
Vaginal yeast infection displays some nonspecific symptoms like itching in vaginal area or in vulva region of vagina, burning sensation, soreness in vaginal area, feeling of pain while passing urine or during sexual intercourse, and usual vaginal discharge etc. which are common for all kind of vaginal infections as well as similar to urinary tract infection in females.
However, if the problem of vaginitis recurs frequently in a female [at least 3-4 times in a year , it may signify some other diseases and it needs serious medical concern.
