Urinary Tract Infection In Men

Urinary Tract infection [UTI] is commonly seen in women more than men. However, men are not completely excluded from the chance of this infection, rather in case of men urinary tract infection comes out as more complicated factor because it encompasses urinary tract infection with anomaly in reproductive system as well.

According to the regions of infection, UTI in men are mainly of two types such as upper urinary tract infection and lower urinary infection. In upper urinary tract infection, kidney gets swollen and in case of lower urinary tract infection, bladder lining gets swollen.

Upper urinary tract infection in men is called pyelonephritis. In this condition, urine flows back in the uretor after it comes out from the bladder. The general symptoms of pyelonephritis includes side or back pain, shivering, major abdominal pain, lethargy, high temperature that retains in spite of medication, visible change in skin tone, blood in urine, or urine with cloudy color, strong or foul odor in urine, dysuria, nausea and bout of vomiting, and increased urge of urination.

Lower urinary tract infection is medically termed as cystitis. It happens due to infection of intestinal bacteria E.Coli; in some abnormal situations, the growth of these bacteria becomes so fast that it becomes impossible to excrete all bacteria through passing urine. Therefore a large number of bacteria stay back in urethra and bladder and cause the infection.

However, the chance of cystitis is rare between men and the reason is urethra of men is longer than women and is located in reasonable distance from anus.
General symptoms of cystitis are abnormal urine color, increased urge to urinate, foul odor in urine, dysuria, unusual pressure in pelvis, feeling of chill, lethargy, mild to moderate fever, side pain, irritation, nausea, frequent vomiting, and feeling of pain in penis during intercourse.

Men who are suffering from the problem of enlarged prostrate, chronic diabetes, or due to some ailment are confined to bed rest are more vulnerable to urinary tract infection. People leading sedentary life style lack mobility in their daily life thus gets susceptible for urinary track infection. Men who are not hygiene conscious or have multiple sex partners are also susceptible to urinary tract infection.
