January 13, 2010
Urinary tract infection is the infection in urinary tract; it is also known as UTI. it is more common with women but in some cases men are not spared. In men, urinary tract infection involves urethra and uterus. When the infection remains within urethra it is called urethritis; when the infection impacts on prostrate, it is called prostatitis. Although infection in bladder and kidney are less common but the men above 50 year age bracket are at more risk of developing urinary tract infection in bladder and kidneys. Bladder infections are termed as cystitis and kidney infections are termed as pyelonephritis. In some instances, a male patient may have multiple urinary tract infection at a time.
Urinary tract infection in men is predominantly a bacterial infection. These germs get inside the urethra and travel at upward direction of the urinary tract which may spread the infection in kidney, bladder, prostrate gland, or in urethra.
Predominantly, urinary tract infection occurs mostly in women. However, men also get to suffer from this infection under certain physical conditions. Rather it will be better to say that there are certain specific triggers for urinary tract infection, like having kidney stone in ureters, or in kidney.
In some instances, enlarged prostrate also cause urinary tract. These physical conditions cause obstruction in passing normal urine flow and results in formation of bacteria inside the urinary tract causing urinary tract infection.
Diabetic patients are more at risk of developing urinary tract infection.
Patients who are bed ridden and are placed with a catheter via urethra to drain out urine are more at risk of developing urinary tract infection.
Certain kinds of sexual activities may result in urinary tract infection in men, especially those people have multiple sex partner are vulnerable to developing urinary tract infection.
Some men may have no visible symptoms against the existing urinary tract infection in their urinary tract but in some instances some symptoms like unusual urge for frequent urination, pain and burning sensation while passing the urine, sudden waking up from sleep due to unusual urge for urination, pain and tenderness in bladder, cloudy and smelly kind of urine, shivering, mild to moderate fever, nausea and vomiting, and pain in upper back portion etc. are seen in male patients against their urinary tract infection.
It is important to consult doctor in case of any of the already mentioned symptoms of UTI in men. However, in case the age of the patient is above 50, and the patient feels problems like fullness in rectum, burning sensation in urine, or development of disturbance while passing urine, it is to be taken as serious concern and doctors to be consulted at the earliest.
