The Importance of Vitamin D

Although women and children are being advised to consume more and more of vitamin d, men should take in vitamin d as well. Vitamin d is a fat soluble vitamin. Consequently, it prevents rickets, osteomalacia and osteoporosis. However, unlike other costly and expensive and unaffordable vitamins, vitamin d is very cheap and affordable.Vitamin d, for example, calcium is very vital and essential for strong and healthy bone formation and quick bone growth and development. Calcium is present in milk and milk products like butter, cheese, curd and cottage cheese as well. This vitamin is also required for strengthening the immune system so that the body and the system is able to fight against many common infections like cough, cold, viral fever, flu and many others.

Vitamin d deficiency is related to high blood pressure as well as heart failure. There are various sources of vitamin d such as sunlight, tanning beds, natural and fortified food products and supplements.

A 10-15 minutes exposure to sunlight, twice a week without sunscreen, can provide a sufficient amount of vitamin d. UV rays for the tanning beds can provide vitamin d. However, ultraviolet radiation can prove to be harmful as it causes cancer.

Many food products have very little vitamin d except fish oil. Good fish oil includes cod liver oil, which contains ample vitamin d. Mostly milk, juices and cereals are fortified with vitamin d.

Vitamin D Supplements are available in the form of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is considered more effective. Due to insufficient amount of this vitamin in maximum food products, people are compelled to take in supplements.Many women and children are deficient in Vitamin D. Therefore, they should take in more and more of this vitamin, that is, more and more of Vitamin D.

The consumption of this vitamin is so very essential. Lack of this vitamin or deficiency may lead to severe diseases like rickets, osteoporosis, osteomalacia and also high blood pressure, cardiac arrest and heart failure. It may also lead to immense fatigue, drowsiness, weakness, lethargy due to the lack of energy due to vitamin d deficiency.
