Pre-Menstrual Syndrome

Pre-menstrual syndrome is some complications occur specifically in pre-menstrual period. Before 1-2 weeks of menstruation, these complications come in notice and with commencing of the menstruation cycle, these symptoms go off. Pre- menstruation cycle is observed in almost (85%) all women irrespective of age, and the symptoms vary typically from one woman to other.

Whatever are the symptoms of PMS, it is in general case remains within the limit of general tolerance. But in case of 3-8% women these symptoms cause excessive irritation and trouble, which need medical interventions.

There are different symptoms of PMS and it is not necessary that all these symptoms will occur at time in a person suffering from PMS. Although most of the symptoms are general but in some cases emotional stress and physical pain become so intolerable that it hampers daily activities.

This excessive disorder caused by PMS is called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). Otherwise, other general symptoms of PMS are tension and excitement out of trivial matter or out of nothing, depression, lack of concentration, antipathy for communication, headache, fatigue, pain in abdomen, increase of body weight due to fluid retention, occurrence of pimples, tendency of loose motion or constipation, muscle pain and leg cramp, and eating disorder are the main symptoms of this phase.

There is one prevalent cause for occurrence of PMS and this happens due to temporary change in hormonal arrangement. That is why in pregnancy and in after menopause these symptoms are never observed in once PMS affected women. In PMS phase some temporary changes take place in brain cells and this change results in fatigue and sleep disorder. Anyway, the best process of detecting the problems of PMS is to keep an eye on these days and accordingly to take medical advice on the commonly notices problems of these days.

PMS is mainly common with women with single child, depression prone, on the age on either over 40 or below 20, in adolescence period, in case of taking oral contraceptives, after hysterectomy, and before menopause.

Life style modification and self-management is the best way to reduce the intensity of PMS. Some precautions like not to take processed food, keeping emotion under control, sharing good books and fun movie, avoidance for tension creating atmosphere, to keep closeness with the closed relatives, to reduce work pressure, not to make late night these days help somehow to overcome the stress caused by PMS.
