Ketogenic Diet

Ketogenic diet or the diet plan for epileptic children is one of the most common diet plan that has been in use for a very long time. The entire plan is worked out for these children and in order to help them effectively from getting seizures and thereby to ensure health too. However, in recent times this diet plan has been effectively used by many to help in effective weight loss and thereby to secure health too.

The basic plan of this diet is to consume more of fats and less of protein and very limited amount of carbohydrate. While normally the body releases energy by burning carbohydrates but with this diet, the body releases energy by burning fats and generating ketones within the body. After having been used for years to help epileptic children this diet has suddenly been attributed with effective weight loss ingredients and thus has become a favorite with many.

The total amount of fat intake by the body has to be four times as much the total amount of carbohydrate and protein intake in the body. The increase in the amount of fat will find its way into the body as an effective agent for energy release within the body and will regulate the use of glucose for the same too. Actually, this diet is a direct implementation from the very concept of starvation.

Whenever the body is starving and the energy level in the body is lowered, the body automatically starts fuelling in energy by working with the fats and running the process of ketosis. The idea of the ketogenic diet is similar to this concept. As the whole diet has to boost the fat intake of the body along with the protein so, the normal diet has to include more of eggs, fish, chicken, cream, cheese and of course artificial sweeteners.

You are bound to lose those extra pounds quite easily and in a faster way when you are following this diet plan. The fat works effectively to energize you and at the same time to help melt the excessive depositions in the body. You have to strictly avoid the intake of rice and flour. Thus, pasta, noodles, bread etc are a strict no during the time you are on this diet.

However, in order to boost up and cover up the lack of carbohydrate. You must begin eating more of fruits and vegetables during the entire time you would be following this diet. Completely replace sugar and try to work with sweeteners as the staple products while preparing dessert even. Do not eat ice cream, as it might be high on the carbohydrate quotient and avoid dairy products too.

You can go for cream and yogurt though. You can simply eat many vegetable curries, soups, non-veg delicacies during this time to stay healthy and to ensure regular high dose of fat intake in the body too.  Children with epilepsy are prescribed this diet when no other medications seem to work effectively for them. This diet has brought about extensively high results too in the field of epilepsy.
