Itchy Eye Symptoms and Causes

The problem of itchy eye is initiated by different reasons. The problem of itchy eye may not be fatal for eye health but it creates profuse irritation and discomfort for the suffering patients. Watery discharge and red eyes are other associated discomforts of itchy eye syndrome which add extra agony for suffering patient.

The intensity of itchiness may differ from one person to another depending on the sensitivity and severity of problem; however, itchy eye problem has some general symptoms like red eyes, swollen eyes, constant sneezing and coughing, running nose, itchy nose and throat. In some instances, the affected patient may feel the problem of mild to severe headache, especially if the patient suffers from chronic sinusitis.

Although not obvious, in some instances the suffering patient may feel extra problem of heaviness in eyelids, he/she may suffer from temporary phase of sleeplessness, and unconditional fatigue. However, the issue of fatigue is not related to itchy eye discomfort.

If eyes are not washed in morning, there is high chance that the secretion of thick fat from that inner corner eye gland results in itchy eyes. Sweat from hands and face while rubbing eyes may cause itchiness in eye.

If any foreign object gets into an eye it causes intense itching and red watery eyes. Sometimes small flies get inside one eye and cause itchiness in eye. Dust particles also initiate the same discomfort if get into eye.

If by chance fluids of sharp taste get in touch of eyes, it causes intense itchiness in eyes; if smoke comes in contact of eye, it initiates discomfort and itchy irritation of eye.

Common ailments like cold attack, flu infection, or sinusitis may initiate the associated problem of itchy eyes; as the infection gets subsided the discomfort also gets cured.

Conjunctivitis is the infection of conjunctive, the membrane over the eye ball. One of the bothering symptoms for conjunctivitis is itchy eye.

Additionally, eyelid disorders, and dry eye syndrome initiate itchy eye problem. Allergy is one of the main reasons for itchy eyes.  Frequent contact with allergy triggers like Pollens, dust mites, pet hair, certain medications, certain cosmetics, insect bites, and food allergy problem may initiate itchy eye symptom in allergy sensitive individual.
