Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism, in simple explanation, is the imbalance of thyroid hormone, caused by its deficiency. Hypothyroidism can be generated by some other diseases like diabetes, or it can occur as a result of lack of stimulation by the master gland of the body-Pituitary gland. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is the hormone that stimulates thyroid gland to be activated. Although hypothyroidism can affect anybody, at any age, women are mainly affected by this disease and the age range 35–60 is high- risk period for infliction of hypothyroidism in health system of a woman.

Symptom of hypothyroidism varies from one person to another and also in the parameter of severity; however, the symptoms are very subtle in nature. Even the persons suffering from mild hypothyroidism may not suffer from any particular ailments as visible by others or by own experience. The most critical form of hypothyroidism is known by myxedema which may turn into coma ultimately causing death.

Thyroid gland which is under- active may cause different kind of emotional disturbances and malfunctioning of different organs. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism in adults are feeling of tiredness or feeling of being run down always, gaining abnormal weight and facing difficulty in losing the same, drowsy feeling, feeling of depression, severe intolerance to cold, thinning of hair volume, nails become brittle, constipation followed by sudden lose motion, reduced libido and in some cases pain in muscles.

In some cases the experience of dry and rough skin, changed harshness of voice, facial hair, puffiness of hands and face, abnormality in menstrual cycle, and unnatural decreased capacity to taste or to smell are the symptoms of severe hypothyroidism. Although the disease of hypothyroidism needs prolong treatment, its diagnosis and treatment are easy. Daily administration of hormone tablet can solve the complications completely.

Hypothyroidism is caused by two main reasons in most of the cases. The first probability is induced due to some medical treatment. If due to any specific reason the thyroid gland is affected through a process of surgery, it creates hypothyroidism. On the other hand, the abnormal inflammation of thyroid gland causes hypothyroid as it is not possible for enlarged thyroid to produce adequate amount of thyroid hormone. The most common cause of the failure of thyroid gland is caused by auto immunity that is destruction caused by own system of body. In these auto immune cases also hormone therapy as per doctor’s instruction, can control the deficiency of hormone supply in body.
