Hyponatremia
December 5, 2008
Low concentration of sodium in blood or excess water in blood plasma is medically termed as Hyponatremia. It is common health disorder in adults and this disease is commonly observed in the patients who ere hospitalized for a considerable long time or they are under long term medicinal treatment. This disorder is predominantly related to water metabolism and conditions like less urination, excessive intake of water, and major changes imposed on kidney like abrupt reduce of mass or blood flow etc.
Apart from these, there are some more factors held responsible for this disorder like kidney failure, cirrhosis, severe vomiting or acute diarrhea, hypothyroidism, excess activity of anti-diuretic hormone and passive result for pain medication, antidepressants, and diuretic medication on a patient.
The range of symptoms varies a lot and differs from one person to another; the intensity may vary fro minor to severe problems and should include I it range muscle cramps, nausea, slurred speech, disorientation, confusion and performing unexpected and unsocial behavior. In its severe attack, a patient of Hyponatremia may have seizures or effect of coma and death can follow the state of coma. In fact a severe case of Hyponatremia may lead to fatal and demand major medical intervention.
Minor symptoms of this disease include nausea and mild muscular cramps. Mild intensity of attack can be resisted by salty food and sodium enriched sports drink. However in case of severe attack from the very beginning the patient should be treated by medical professionals and not by any home based treatment procedure.
Although it is fatal problem but there is no definite guidelines to prevent the problem of hyponatremia, and doctor’s device differs from patient-wise as per the body condition and tolerance type of the patient. Some medical professional advise to take less amount of water to balance the intake of sodium and water, but anyhow keeping phisible factors in mind this idea seems not to click at market.
On reverse some other group of medical professionals recommend to increase intake of salt because by ingesting some more amount of sodium and allowing them to be mixed in water the level of sodium concentration in blood increases to a satisfactory level causing the savings of life of the effected patient.
