Home Remedies For Treating Colitis

Colitis is a medical disorder that occurs when the inner lining of the colon which is located in the large intestine, gets swollen and inflamed. It is caused due to excessive build up of toxins in the body, acute constipation, allergies due to food, indigestion, intake of strong antibiotics, drinking of contaminated water, and from infections spread by bacteria.The signs and symptoms of colitis include severe abdominal pain, blood in bowel, fever, inability to sleep well, weakness, constipation, weight loss, lack of interest in eating, and the urge to pass stools more often. This disorder can be treated at home by some natural remedies and modifications in diet.

A juice can be made combining pineapple and carrot together. This is effective in treating colitis. Juice can also be made of ripe papaya, or eaten as a fruit. If garlic and peppermint is taken with papaya it will aid in digestion of food and also help to cure the inflamed colon fast.

Aloe Vera has got anti inflammatory properties and if its juice is taken regularly, it will help to sooth the irritated colon and cause comfort to the intestine. A glass of buttermilk can be taken along with a ripe banana and some rice added to it. Banana works as a natural laxative and is good for easing constipation. Rice can be easily digested and it is useful for colitis patients. Rice can also be mixed with curd and banana and given to such patients.

Herbs like slippery elm and white oak bark can be taken to heal colitis. Ginseng, garlic and spirulina also work wonders when taken habitually. Coconut water is also good for soothing the infected colon. It should be drunk regularly until the colon heals. Coconut water can also be used by combining it with juice extracted from drumstick leaves and little honey.

Changes have to be made to the diet. Fruits like apple and banana are to be included. Green leafy vegetables like cabbage and other fresh vegetables can be given in boiled form. Rich, spicy and salty foods, white bread, strong coffee and alcohol have to be avoided as they will irritate the intestine more.

Protein and fiber rich diet is very essential for this condition. Drinking water should be boiled to ensure it is free from bacteria and germs to heal colitis effectively.
