Home Remedies For Flu & Phlegm

Every individual gets affected by the flu which simply means days and weeks of suffering and fighting its end product – mucus or phlegm. Grownups can cough and remove the interfering phlegm, but babies and children cannot do that.
Flu leaves so much phlegm congested inside your lungs and throat that you think of taking over the counter medicines to get rid of the flu. Even though such medicines are highly effective cure but they don’t prevent the flu or phlegm from re-appearing.

Time tested and accepted home remedies on the other hand can be tried anytime to prevent flu from disturbing your life. Most importantly they don’t cost you much and over dose doesn’t harm you in anyway. Here are some of the best home remedies as well as suggestions for treating as well as preventing flu and the excessive phlegm resulting from it:

Avoid getting your head wet for a long time by drying your hair as quickly as you can. This is especially important for children. Steam inhalation is a very effective treatment for flu. You can add mint or eucalyptus or any mentholatum balm in the water for better results.

More so avoid dairy products such as milk, curd, butter milk, ice creams etc if you have frequent history of flu and excessive phlegm attack. Avoid cold food items; instead eat warm or hot food items whenever you can. Honey is very effective in treating phlegm and the good point is it can be used in a variety of ways.

Add honey to hot water and drink it slowly at night before going to sleep. You can also mix pepper powder with honey and take the mixture preferably in a spoon three times a day. Honey can also be mixed with grape juice and taken three times a day.

Thus you see, honey is an important ingredient in most home remedies for flu and phlegm treatment. Similar to honey, lemon is also considered important for flu and phlegm treatment. You can eat a lemon as it is or with pepper and salt to treat the phlegm.

Another home remedy is to mix lemon juice with the juice of raw onion and then take this mixture three times a day. For babies, heat coconut or any oil and add camphor pellets to it. Mix it completely and let the mixture become lukewarm; now apply it over the baby’s chest by clockwise massaging for atleast five minutes.

Once done, squeeze a towel dipped in hot water and slowly apply over the massaged area carefully. Finally ginger juice mixed with or without honey if taken regularly can fight flu and excessive phlegm formation. This mixture is recommended for babies and children too.
