Gout diet – Foods to avoid for gout

Gout is a type of arthritis and it is caused due to accumulation of uric acid in our bone joints in crystalline conditions. The patients of gout feel sharp pain in bone joints and acute difficulty in movement.Gout can be controlled by relevant treatment. However, gout diet helps in controlling the production and excretion of uric acid from body. Gout diet may not be a medicinal remedy but it is a natural cure remedy which is efficient in controlling gout attack.

Those who are suffering in gout should avoid those foods which are high in purine because purine is the key factor which controls the production of uric acid in body.

Plant based proteins are good food for gout patients. Plenty of water intakes will help to flush out uric acid from body. Fat-free or low fat dairy products, whole grain and fresh veggies and fruits are good dietary options for gout patients.

The gout patients should maintain some restrictions in their diet routine in order to control the production of uric acid in body.

Some of the major foods which should be avoided by a gout patient for his well-being are discussed here; however, gout patients should have a diet plan with the help of doctor and a nutritionist depending on their respective age and health conditions.

A gout patient should reduce or avoid animal protein intakes like meat. Organ meats, veal, bacon, offal, sweetbreads, meat extracts, broths, bullion type of meats are not good for gout patients because these animal proteins and are major trigger for uric acid production.

Gout patients should have restriction on consumption of poultry items like goose and turkey. Some seafood items are not good and healthy dietary options for gout patients. Seafood items like mackerel, cod, trout, herring, salmon, sardines, mussels, anchovies, shrimp, and crab are included into category of restricted foods for gout patients.

Consumption of alcohol is not favorable for gout patients as alcohol increases uric acid production in body. For the same reason yeast products like beer and baked goods should be avoided by gout patients.

Vegetables like cooked spinach, cauliflower, rhubarb, lentils, peas, and beans are not recommended for intake in gout preventing diet because these fruits and veggies are stimulators of uric acid production. Other than these, fried foods, coffee, rich desserts, spices, pastries, foods made of processed sugars, white flour based foods consumption should be restricted.
