Although a number of treatments are available for hyperpigmented skin but the course of treatment you choose should be based on the cause behind hyperpigmentation of skin, your skin type and your aesthetic goals.
At-home treatments for hyperpigmentation may involve use of herbs, common items from the kitchen cupboards, bleaching creams, homemade facial masks and homemade skin combinations. Here is a snapshot of currently available DIY home remedies for hyperpigmentation.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is not just an excellent exfoliant; it is also quite alkaline in nature and its particles are rounded, small and fine in texture. These properties make baking soda both effective as well as gentle on hyperpigmented skin. If you’re suffering from hyperpigmented skin, scrub your face with baking soda and it will remove dead cells from skin, thereby reducing the effect of hyperpigmentation. To use baking soda as a scrub, you will need to mix a teaspoon of baking soda along with a teaspoon of water to form a paste. This paste can then be massaged on the skin in circular motion.
Facial Steaming
If you’re suffering with hyperpigmented skin, then you must treat your face with steam after every few days. This will loosen the dead skin cells, thereby detoxifying the skin and making it clean. All you need is a bowl of hot, boiling water for the treatment. Simply, lean your face over it in such a way that the head is covered with a towel and steam is directed towards the face. You must take the steam treatment for 5 to 7 minutes and then wash your face with cold water.
Lemon Juice
Other than high levels of vitamin C, lemon juice is also quite acidic in nature and fights quite well against the free radicals present in body, thereby increasing cell turnover speed. Using lemon to treat hyperpigmented skin will allow hyperpigmented skin cells to be replaced with new skin cells. You can fill an empty spray bottle with lemon juice. Now you can simply spray it on hyperpigmented areas.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal can perform three different functions. It can exfoliate the skin, moisturize it, and also supplement it with vitamin E. Using oatmeal on face will soften the dead skin cells and finally slough them away. Applying oatmeal to skin is quite easy. All you need to do is wet your skin thoroughly and then massage should some raw oats for about a minute. Wash off with water.
Chemical Peels
Glycolic acid, Trichloric acid and Salicylic acid are some chemical treatments that can be used for curing hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels fade hyperpigmentation patches effectively.
White Vinegar
Dilute White vinegar in water and clean your face with it. After cleaning the face, rinse with water but make sure you do not towel dry your face. You should instead let the face dry on its own. By doing this, the skin will be able to absorb the required acetic acid and in turn show remarkable signs of improvement in skin.
Vegetable and Fruit juice
Tomato and lemon juice can help in dissolving the uppermost layer of skin and remove hyperpigmented patches and tan spots from skin due to their acidic nature.
Almonds
Soak Almonds in water overnight. Next morning grind it to paste. Add some milk in the paste and apply it over the dark spots. Almonds will not only improve your skin condition, it will also nourish your skin.
Sunscreen
It is important to use a sunscreen that has a minimum of 15 SPF in order to prevent hyperpigmentation. In case the sun is harsh, keep reapplying sunscreen after every 2 to 3 hours.
Honey and Lemon
Almost all of us know about the bleaching properties of lemon. However, when lemon is mixed with honey and spread over hyperpigmented skin, it significantly lightens the pigmented areas. You can mix equal parts of lemon and honey and apply it on skin for about 30 minutes.
Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera gel is widely used to treat burns and a variety of other skin ailments. Aloe-Vera gel is also an excellent remedy for hyperpigmentation on hands as well as face. You can either use Aloe Vera gels available in market or use raw gel obtained from an Aloe plant. Just break a stem from the plant and squeeze out the gel. Now simply rub it over dark areas on hands and face.
Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is an excellent bleaching agent and it also blocks melanin. You can obtain hydroquinone-based lotion or ointment from any drugstore and use it on the areas that are hyperpigmented.
Retin-A
Derived from vitamin A, Retin A can work wonders on pigmented skin. It not only exfoliates the skin and fastens new skin cell growth, it also fades the hyper-pigmented area and diminish uneven and dark skin patches from the skin.
Brightening Creams
Hosts of brightening creams are available at various retail stores and drugstores. Buy a good brightening cream such as Lumixyl and apply it on the over-hyperpigmented areas. Lumixyl cream is considered to be an excellent alternative to hydroquinone as it contains only naturally-occurring peptides. The cream can be applied topically and you do not require a prescription for it. It reduces melanin effectively without any side effects or irritation as in case of hydroquinone or Retin-A.
