There are many reasons for the problem of halitosis some of which are discussed below.
Problems like poor dental hygiene, gross addiction of alcoholism, smoking addiction, consumption of certain foods, chronic constipation initiate the problem of bad breath in some specific cases. Diabetic patients have a general proneness in developing bad odor in mouth.
Some specific disorders initiate the problem of halitosis; out of the list, metabolic disorders, gastro-intestinal disorder, stringent dieting, and major hormonal disorders are the common occurrences for bad breath issue.
Sometimes cough and cold related problems cause bad breath. Lung congestion, lung infection, tonsillitis, sinusitis, mouth-throat-nose conditions, and problem of laryngitis cause bad breath. However, with the necessary treatment of the infection the problem of bad breath also gets reduced.
Dental decay is another major reason for bad breath. Dental cavity, gingivitis, gum decay, inflammation, bleeding gum, pyorrhea, periodontal disease, and plaque and tarter deposits in dental roots are the common oral problems causing bad breath as a side effect of the infection.
In these situations, relevant dental treatment, maintenance of oral hygiene, and consumption of vitamin C helps in restoring normalcy and the problem of bad breath vanishes as the infection is cured.
The break down of food particles in and around teeth results foul odor. Consumption of foods with volatile oils is another reason for bad breath. For example onion and garlic consumption especially in raw condition causes typical bad breath. In case of these foods the bad breath problem may persist up to 72 hours after consumption.
Dry mouth causes bad breath. In normal condition saliva in mouth works as natural cleansing agent and keeps mouth clean. But in case of dry mouth, dead cells tend to accumulate on tongue, cheeks, and gums and after a certain time due to decomposition of the dead cells bad odor in mouth is caused.
During night, if we sleep without brushing our teeth, there is high chance to get bad breath in the morning. In some specific cases, smoking, or adverse effect of medication may cause dry mouth and initiates the problem of bad breath.
