Earwax and Related Problems

Earwax is a natural product of body which helps in protecting the ear canal. This natural product is made of skin, hair, debris [dirt and shampoo], and sweat together forming a fluid like substance secreted by glands inside the ear canal. The ear canals have self-cleaning quality.

Earwax helps in filtering dust, keeps ear and its interior clean, and saves ear canal for all sorts of infection. Generally, earwax is a self-draining type of natural liquid which does not demand any special concern. As the skin of the outer ear gets shaded, the earwax is carried to the outer part of the ear canal and gets drained from the ear all by its own. It is a  natural self –cleaning process of ear.

There are different color shades for earwax and it varies from light brown to its darker shade or orange in color. In adults, the earwax gets darker color tone as well as  gets stiff in texture whereas in children earwax is softer in texture and lighter in color tone. Earwax tends to be produced more in quantity in children’s ears but as they grow up in age the quantity of earwax production gets reduces naturally.

Generally, earwax is produced by the outer portion of ear canal and does not get deeply impacted unless it is pushed inside by exterior force. The ear canal may become blocked, when we attempt to clean it by using cotton swabs, booby pins, or by pushing wax inside the canal in artificial manner from outside. If the earwax is impacted in ear canal by force, it may initiate in imposing hear loss or other kinds of ear problems such as tinnitus, fullness in ear, or the problem of vertigo. There is fair chance that while we tend to poke the wax with some foreign materials, it gets more vulnerability to get compressed against the eardrum.

Most of the earwax problems can be managed in home by simple home remedies; however, it needs professional help and expertise of a medical professional when it becomes necessary to remove earwax which has become tightly packed in ear canal. In case ear wax is tightly packed in ear canal, it is essential to seek professional help unless it may impose permanent hearing inability of the affected person.
