Different Types of Depression

Depression is a generic term, which encompasses many types of mental turmoil; all these types have certain common characteristics but all these terms are different from each other. It is necessary to understand different types of depression in order to trace the tentative cause and relevant treatment procedure for restoring normalcy.
The most common types of depressions are major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, seasonal depression, and psychotic depression. Brief details of each type are discussed here for general comprehensive idea of different types of depression.
Major depression is a kind of depression spell lasts for several weeks and sometimes for several months and this type of depression is considered as one of the most severe depression related disorders. The main trait of this type of depression is that the patient affected by this type of depression loses all impetus for general day to day activities and suffers from frequent mood swing. The episode for major depression is caused by a single event and then the recurring events comes as related episodes to the main course of the event.
Dysthymia is another type of depression which sustains for a longer period of time. However, it is not as serious case as major depression. The typical trait of this type of depression is that the affected patient may down for certain span of time in between usual normal periods. This kind of depression makes a person boring and unpredictable but generally do not hamper normal course of activities.
Bipolar mood disorder is another type of depression, which is in general, seems to be severe attack of negative attitude or a phase of extreme sensitivity in between apparently normal state of mind of the patients, which is termed as mania. This physical condition of depression is also termed as maniac depression.
Seasonal depression generally occurs at a particular time of year due to different reasons. This kind of depression is also termed as SAD, Seasonal affective disorder. This kind of depression is usually found in winter season; although short termed, it can be severe in its intensity of attack and outcome.
Psychotic depression comes as an outcome with mental disorders like schizophrenia, Dissociative identity Disorder [DID] etc. type of intricate mental condition. In this kind of depression hallucination and depression affect the patients’ mental state and the patients tend to lose their consciousness and correlative power with real world.
