Diet for Nephritis
Nephritis occurs when the kidneys get inflamed and can affect a single or both the kidneys. It is accompanied by a number of symptoms like blood in urine, headache, cloudy or dark urine, fever, loin pain, decrease in urination, drowsiness, poor appetite, nausea, abdominal pain and swelling around the eyes.
Doctors use certain medications to treat nephritis and often dialysis is also undertaken in case of acute nephritis. But a proper diet can ensure a natural way of treating this abnormality of the kidney and help in aiding in fast recovery.
The diet should focus on healing the inflamed kidneys. Hence a patient must start by following a liquid diet for first few days. Juices made from vegetables are very beneficial and they help the body to get rid of the harmful toxins and other wastes which cause the inflammation in the kidneys.
This all juice diet should be followed for at least one week. Carrot juice is very helpful if added with little honey and lemon juice and drank everyday early in the morning. After that fresh fruit juices have to included in the diet. This has to be continued for a minimum of four to five days.
After this a well balanced but restricted diet has to be followed. A lot of fresh fruits have to be incorporated. Juices like that made from oranges are very good for nephritis patients. Protein can also be introduced in little amounts in the form of natural yogurt and organic whole milk.
Steamed vegetables and nuts should be included in the diet. Such patients are advised to follow a low protein and vegetarian diet for at least two to three months until the symptoms subside.
Diuretics help to increase and facilitate the easy passing of urination and therefore such items like coconut water and grapes should be included in the diet as they act as natural and safe diuretics.
Tender coconut water should be drank twice a day. Grapes contain a good amount of water in them and also have little albumin and sodium chloride that helps to treat problems of kidney. Banana has less protein and salt and is therefore beneficial for nephritis.
Some food items have to be strictly avoided. They include items which contain oxalic acid like spinach, beets, cocoa, chocolate, wheat bran and rhubarb.
