October 16, 2008
Diabetes is a physical condition where the sugar level of a person increases above normal level due to malfunctioning of insulin hormone in body and this disease itself works as a silent killer, damaging other organs as well as the immunity system of body abruptly. Diabetic diet needs to be consumed along with insulin dose or with the oral hypoglycemic types of medicines as per the prescription of the consulting physician.
The optimum goal for diabetic diet is to maintain a definite scale of body weight, keeping a tuning with nutrition and blood sugar level of body. Diet plan is not a fixed plan and it varies from one patient to another depending on the age, sex, weight, height, life style, and on the type of diabetes. A dietician always plans a diabetic diet consulting the physician’s prescription because heart condition, cholesterol plays a major role in forming diet. Depending on all the health related information, the quantity of fiber, carbohydrate, or protein intake are decided in diet plan.
Diabetic plan is not a fixed plan. It is a range of foods that is allowed in perfect combination with other to maintain the right proportion of calorie intake. This kind of multi combination food optional diet is called exchange diet where one type of food is exchangeable with other keeping the combination right. For example, if a diabetic patient intakes major part of diet with protein, she must lower down carbohydrate because protein on that day will work for source of required calorie. In that day he/she should take adequate fibrous food to avoid constipation.
It is not the dietician who needs to be meticulous about diet planning but the diabetic patient needs to be sincere in following the plan. Instead of three heavy meals, 4-5 small meals need to be indulged so that the stomach is never empty to feel the intensity of hunger. The major motive behind selecting foods will be high nutrition value but low count on calorie and selected fruits can be included in diet plan to avoid monotonous diet menu.
Diabetic patient should avoid junk food and should put stress on in taking home made fresh food contains less amount of unsaturated fats to resist the tendency of acquiring higher cholesterol count in blood.
