Diet for Acidity

Acidity is a condition in which excessive acid is produced in the stomach by the gastric glands which results in nausea, vomiting, burning sensation in the chest and stomach, restlessness and loss of appetite.

The main causes of acidity are consumption of excessive spicy and rich foods, irregular sleep, stress and anxiety, improper chewing of food, obesity, taking excessive alcohol and problems in the

working of the digestive system.

Acidity can be treated with some simple remedies at home and certain modification in diet. These are as follows:

People who suffer from acidity should take a glass of warm water every morning in empty stomach. This is very effective as it neutralizes the acidity in the intestine.

A fruit rich diet consisting of banana, watermelon, apple, cucumber, papaya, figs, coconut, ripe apple, dates and pomegranate should be taken. Coconut water is beneficial for acidity, and therefore it should be taken at least 3 to 4 times a day to get relief.

A cup of mint juice can be taken after meals. This will help to get rid of gas formations in the stomach. The mint flavor also helps to treat the feeling of nausea. Another important remedy for reducing excessive acid formations in intestine is to eat jaggery daily.

A glass of cold milk also helps in getting rid of acidity. Alternatively curd can also be taken to get quick relief.  Vegetables like carrots, beet root, sweet potato should be incorporated in the menu, and cabbage juice can also be included and taken every day until the symptoms of acidity does not go away.

Strong coffee, tea and alcohol should be avoided. Instead herbal teas like the ones which contain liquorice and spearmint can be taken as substitutes. Another useful drink very popular amongst acidity patients can be prepared by adding honey and apple cider vinegar approximately two teaspoonfuls each to a glass of water.

This if taken daily especially after meals helps to decrease acidity in the stomach. Finally, a person suffering from acidity should strictly stay away from fried foods, spicy and rich dishes, caffeine, alcohol, garlic, pepper and onion.

Citrus fruits like orange, lemon, cranberries and tomatoes have to be avoided as they contain a high degree of acidic elements. Drinking lots of water is must to help in the smooth functioning of the digestive system.
