Constipation In Adults
Constipation indicates difficulty in evacuation of bowel; for most of the patients of constipation the problem occurs due to difficulty in passing stool as the stool gets too hard to pass through rectum. The hardness of stool is caused due to lack of water in stool than the amount of water in normal stool. However, constipation is a symptom of some disorder, itself it is not a health problem.
It is rather difficult to describe constipation because it varies from one person to another with different intensity and associated problems.
There are different causes for constipation. Some of the main causes of constipation are poor diet, irregular or poor bowel habit, and frequent taking painkillers; some long-term medications also trigger the problem of constipation in the health system.
Frequent traveling, laxative abuse, and irritable bowel syndrome also initiates the problem of constipation in the adults.
Health disorders like intestinal obstruction, reflex spasm also held responsible for initiating the problem of constipation. In pregnancy, a woman may suffer from the problem of constipation which gets over in the post child birth period naturally.
Aging is also a dominant reason for constipation thus senior people face more problems with constipation.
Although the main symptom of constipation is irregularities in bowel movement, some associated symptoms are also seen with the affected patients.
Nausea, fullness in stomach or in the lower abdomen, headache, and mood swings are often seen to be present in the constipated patients. Some patients face loss of appetite, bad breath, bad taste in mouth and coated tongue problem associated with the problem of constipation.
Self care of this problem can rectify this irritating issue. Regular intake of fiber rich diet, exercise, regular bowel habit and adequate drinking of water are the common prevention of constipation.
However, is case there is an absolute emergency like no evacuation since last two weeks, pain in abdomen, vomiting with abdominal pain, bleeding from rectum at the time of passing stool, hemorrhoids, and terrible anal pain are found with any patient, he/she needs to be shifted to health care center for further medical investigation and necessary treatment.
