Colitis Patients’ Diet

Although the problem of colitis is a chronic and recurring one, but the complications and immunity system differs from one man to another depending on it susceptibility and Accordingly diet plan should be designed as per the patient’s food habits and liking and disliking of foods. The severity of the disease, the food tolerance of the patient is also taken in consideration while prescribing a diet regimen for ulcerative colitis patient.
Malnutrition is a recurring problem of colitis. So the ideal diet for colitis need to be covered the nutritional points of views and it needs to be a balanced one. Indian Ayurvedic treatment procedure recommends consumption of vegetables like carrot, potato, pumpkin, gourd, cabbage, cauliflower and cabbage and fruit like banana, papaya, and water melon. Adequate drinking of water is highly recommended to keep the fluid balance of body.
It is a general myth that dairy products need to be excluded from the diet routine of the colitis patient. However, recent research and study supports the consumption of dairy products do not add any adverse effect in the digestive system of the colitis patient but the reaction of these foods differ from one another patient. Therefore, if any adverse effect on any food is observed on any patient, it will require immediate attention of the consulting physicians.
A colitis patient needs to follow some basic rules while maintaining his/her diet.
Intake of regular three to fur meals to avoid empty stomach.
Taking more than sufficient water to keep hydration level up to the mark.
Diet preference should be on dairy products with low fat count, green vegetables, lean meats, and some fruits.
Keep an watch on the reactions of the food items on the patient and accordingly need to change the diet regimen after due consultation with the doctor.
High nutritious fiber rich foods are to be included in the regular diet as per the digestive power of the patient.
Salt and preservatives prove stressful for the digestive as well as immune system. That is why a colitis patient should avoid salty and processed food in diet, natural foods are to be preferred by all means and preservative added foods are to be avoided by the colitis patients.
