Alopecia is loss of hair in any part of the body. When hair loss is occurred on head, it is called baldness. In baldness hair follicles from head become visibly thin, but in case of alopecia hair loss can be recurred in any part of body. The major reasons to generate this kind of problem is cosmetics, skin problem, hormone imbalance, stress and use of certain drugs that causes quick fall of hair follicles. It is possible to detect the nature of alopecia by thorough examination of hair and skin.
In most of the cases (80%) androgenetic alopecia is the reason for frequent hair fall. Here the hair loss happens in male pattern where baldness occurs and in female pattern of alopecia hair line remains intact but the volume of hair markedly becomes thin. Apart from this common reason, hereditary problem, fungal infection, and chronic illness impacts in alopecia. Drugs like chemotherapeutic agents cause major hair loss because of its affinity to destroy cells in the application region. The alopecia caused by drugs is termed as Anagen Effluvium.
Tologen effluvium is another kind of alopecia occurs after severe fever, after pregnancy, or after menopause. It is initiated by certain changes in hormonal arrangement, and if the affected person takes healthy diet and healthy life style, this kind of alopecia is recovered by new hair growth. Under-active or proactive thyroid gland or pituitary gland may cause in alopecia of this type.
There are two more types of common alopecia: one is traction alopecia caused by over tight hair style and alopecia caused by hair pulling habit. Both of the types of disorders are caused by habits and unless habits are not rectified hardly there is any chance to stop or control this kind of hair problems.
Scarring alopecia is generated out of burn injury or radiation result or out of chemotherapy effect. This kind of alopecia is not recoverable because here the scalp gets damaged and sometimes may tend to form skin cancer.
Diagnosis of this type of health disorder is easier because of its visible effect. However, sometimes doctors prefer to go for hair examination or for the biopsy of hair follicles to find the exact reason for alopecia. If medicine cannot cure the problem, the affected person can go for hair transplantation.
